Description

Akumal

Spend a day in contact with nature. Akumal is located about 35 (22 miles) south of Playa del Carmen and has been declared a sanctuary for protected species such as the green turtle and the loggerhead turtle. In the past, this protected area was only accessible by sea. Since marine habitat began to deteriorate due to the large number of trespassing; visitors and unregulated snorkeling activities in large groups operated by large tourism companies. Finally, since 2017 this area has been regulated by restricting the number of visitors to snorkeling.

Now a certified guide must accompany groups of maximum 6 people. You must maintain a distance of 3 meters (10 feet) with protected species, you must wear a life jacket at all times to maintain a horizontal position and thus avoid stepping on sea grass; which is the food source of spotted sea turtles. Sea turtles must swim freely and in a relaxing environment. They must be allowed to surface and breathe, so keeping the minimum distance is essential for their healthy lives. Definitely touching, holding or chasing them is extremely prohibited now, if one is caught violating said implemented control restriction, they will be removed and denied entry again. Following such protection measures will allow the next generations to continue admiring these incredible protected marine species.
